Why I Celebrate Independent Bookstore Day

Reading expands our brains, opens our hearts, and taps into our empathy and creativity. As poet Muriel Rukeyser writes in Speed of Darkness, "the universe is made of stories, not of atoms."

Sometimes breaking things down into smaller pieces isn't what connects us - it is the whole of the lived experience. That feeling of connection and community is what independent bookstores inspire and create.

Thanks to Indies across the country for their commitment to creating inclusive, compassionate communities, their support for my books and message of hope through action, for carrying my books, and hosting events.
