Five years later- the January 6th Insurrection

On the fifth anniversary of the January 6th attack on the Capitol at the urging of the current President, I vividly remember watching this vicious, lawless riot on our democracy unfold in real time with my children, who were then middle schoolers. Seeing a President urge his followers to disrupt and overthrow the results of an free and fair election and violently beat Capitol Hill police was harrowing.
No matter how hard the current Administration tries to re-write history with their new theme of "Patriots March on the Capitol," I will NEVER forget and won't be gaslit about what we all saw in real time.
I am also sharing the words of Maggie Dees, a high school senior in 2021. Wise beyond her years, Maggie is now a graduate of Virginia Tech. Maggie noted that the election results were ultimately ratified, the electoral college votes were certified, and the insurrection did not succeed.
Maggie wrote:
"I now try to look forward to optimism from the darkest day in American history during my lifetime, and hope that it was the push that this national needed to grow and heal."
Maggie's full blog from 2021 is here.
It's five years later. We certainly haven't healed. But we won't forget and we won't give up on the rule of law, free and fair elections, and our constitution - including our First Amendment rights of freedom of speech, religion, and peaceful assembly.
I love my country. I'm not falling for their propaganda and the inept attempts to rewrite history. The policies of this Administration are wildly unpopular. Truth, justice, and democracy will prevail, but only if we all speak up and speak out and hold our elected officials accountable. Democracy is not a spectator sport.
Call (202) 224-3121 and let your members of Congress know that you support the rule of law, international diplomacy, our constitution, and liberty and justice for all. And that you know what happened on January 6th - you saw it, and no matter how hard they try, you won't let this Administration try to tell you otherwise.
